In view of the nature and of the urgency of the temporary positions we are looking to fill, it is important for candidates to be available for temporary employment on short notice. In practice, this implies either being in possession of valid NATO security clearance at the time of application or having been in possession of such a clearance with the possibility to reactivate it swiftly.

1.   POST CONTEXT 

This is a temporary position within the Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE), an organization of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO).

CMRE is an established, world-class scientific research and experimentation facility that organizes and conducts scientific research and technology development, centred on the maritime domain, delivering innovative and field tested Science & Technology (S&T) solutions to address defence and security needs of the Alliance. 

This temporary position is within the Integrated Business Support Branch which plays a pivotal role in driving the Centre’s success through strategic planning, efficient resource management, and effective collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.

2.   PRINCIPAL DUTIES

  • Draft press releases, articles, and other written materials to communicate CMRE’s research findings, events, and initiatives to external audiences.
  • Manage CMRE’s social media channels and website, ensuring that content is engaging, accurate, and up-to-date.
  • Collaborate with internal stakeholders, including scientists and management, to identify and publicize CMRE’s achievements.
  • Monitor media coverage and public perceptions of CMRE, and provide regular reports and analysis to the IBSB Head.
  • Support the organization of public events and workshops to engage with the local community and raise awareness of CMRE’s work.
  • Enhance the visibility and reputation of CMRE within the scientific community and among the general public.

3.   SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS AND ADDITIONAL DUTIES

a. Flexibility Clause
The incumbent may be required to perform other related duties even in other parts of the organization as directed.
All other related duties should correspond with the required competencies for the job.

b. Deployment/Travel
The incumbent may be required to undertake TDY assignments within and outside NATO boundaries.

4.   ESSENTIAL QUALIFICATIONS

a. Professional/Experience

  • Professional experience in public affairs, media relations, or communications, preferably in a scientific or research-oriented environment.
  • Strong writing and editing skills, with the ability to craft clear, compelling messages for different audiences.
  • Experience in managing social media accounts and digital communications platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal and networking skills, with the ability to build and maintain relationships with diverse stakeholders.


b. Education/Training
A minimum requirement of a Bachelor’s degree at a nationally recognized/certified University in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field plus 3 years post – related experience.

c. Language Requirements
A thorough knowledge of one of the two NATO languages, both written and spoken, is essential and some knowledge of the other is desirable.

NOTE: Most of the work of CMRE is conducted in the English language.

5.   DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

Master’s degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or a related field.

6.   COMPETENCIES

All CMRE personnel are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with the current NATO Code of Conduct agreed by the North Atlantic Council (NAC), and thus display the core values of integrity, impartiality, loyalty, accountability, and professionalism.

7.   REMARKS

The duties are mostly performed in an office environment.
This is a temporary position. The successful candidate will be offered a 6 months contract with the possibility of an extension up to a maximum of 12 months.

About Us:

The Centre for Maritime Research and Experimentation (CMRE) is part of the NATO Science and Technology Organization (STO).  The mission of the STO is to help position both national and NATO science and technology investments as a strategic enabler and technology advantage for the defence and security posture of NATO Allies and partners. The Centre conducts scientific research and technology development and delivers innovative field-tested S&T solutions to address the defence and security needs of the Alliance. CMRE has more than 60 years of experience and has produced a cadre of leaders in ocean science, modelling and simulation, acoustics and other disciplines, as well as producing critical results and understanding that have been built into the operational concepts of NATO and the Nations.

 

    What we offer:

    • 37.5 hours per week schedule;
    • 2.5 paid days of leave per month;
    • Fulfilling working atmosphere in an international community; 
    • Contract: in accordance with the NATO Civilian Personnel Regulations, temporary staff may not be employed more than 6 months for the same assignment. However, if later required, contracts may be extended for another period of up to six months.
    • Salary: the remuneration of temporary personnel will be specified in their contracts. It is not exempt from taxation [1]. Temporary personnel are responsible for acquitting themselves of their responsibilities for the payment of taxes. 
    • Benefits package: temporary staff are covered by a benefits package which consists of pension contributions by the Organization (12% of basic salary), medical and accident benefits (death and invalidity) provided under the NATO Group insurance contract, and paid leave of 2.5 days per month worked.
